Approving and Banning Software
This section describes how to approve or ban software using Carbon Black App Control. It includes information about both global and local file approval.
Locally Approving Files
When the Carbon Black App Control Agent is installed on a computer for the first time, the computer goes through an initialization process during which all files present on that computer are locally approved unless they are already globally approved or banned.
Moving Computers to Local Approval Mode
To permit installation of new applications on a selected computer under High Enforcement Level, you can temporarily relax protection and give the computer permission to execute any files that are not banned. The method you use depends on whether the computer is connected to the Carbon Black App Control Server.
Using Timed Policy Overrides
This topic describes how to use timed policy overrides to move offline computers into the Local Approval policy.

    Software approval ensures that users of computers running the Carbon Black App Control Agent can install and run known-good applications regardless of the Carbon Black App Control security settings and Enforcement Level in effect.

      Carbon Black App Control provides a mechanism for locally approving all unapproved files on a selected computer.

        Local Approval mode allows you to install new files that become locally approved without affecting the local state of any files already on the computer before the mode change, or installed after the computer is returned to its normal policy. Local Approval mode is most useful if you have not yet introduced the new files you want to install on a computer.

        When you have put computers into Local Approval mode, you normally restore them to their previous policy as soon as possible after you have finished installing new applications.

    - Marking a File as an Installer or Not an Installer
      When it analyzes a file, Carbon Black App Control determines whether the file is likely to be an installer – that is, whether it will generate additional files when it executes.

    The Files tab of the Software Rules page shows all of the approvals and bans created forindividual files. These rules identify specific files by hash or optionally by file name (for bans only).

  This chapter describes Script rules, which identify files to be tracked and managed as scripts by Carbon Black App Control. The Carbon Black App Control Server includes built-in script rules, and you can create custom rules to identify other scripts.
- YARA Rules
  Carbon Black App Control provides content-based inspection by using YARA rules, which enables more granular control of the security policy in your environment. YARA rules are descriptions of malware samples that can help you detect and classify malware in files. In a rule, the criteria for the rule is defined and tags are specified. When the rule is enabled, tags are assigned to files that meet the criteria for the rule.
- Expert Rules
  Expert rules are Custom, Memory, and Registry rules created with a special interface that provides many more options than the standard interface for these rules. They are intended for expert users working with Carbon Black Support or Technical Services.

  This chapter describes Rapid Configs, which are sets of rules that can be used to accomplish tasks such as application optimization, operating system and application hardening, and approval of files delivered by software distribution systems.

Use a Timed Policy Override Code on a macOS or Linux Computer

To use a Timed Policy Override code on a macOS or Linux computer, perform the following procedure.

Generate a Code to Put a Computer in Temporary Local Approval

On the computer on which to apply the override, open a terminal window and change to the following directory:
- On Linux: cd /opt/Bit9/bin
- On macOS: cd /Applications/Bit9/Tools
Enter the following command together with the override code you generated:

./b9cli -timedoverride <code>
```
- If the code entered is invalid or expired, an error message displays. After three invalid attempts, the program locks out further attempts for an hour or until the agent is restarted.
- If a valid code is entered and the Enforcement Level transition is successful, the message Timed override set is displayed.
